Wool Carpet FAQs

What is wool carpet?

Wool carpet is made from the natural fibres of sheep, spun into yarn and woven or tufted into carpet. Known for its softness, durability, and luxurious feel, wool is one of the most premium carpet materials available.

Key Features of Wool Carpet:

  • Soft & Comfortable – Luxuriously cushioned underfoot.

  • Durable & Resilient – Strong fibres that can withstand moderate to high traffic.

  • Naturally Stain-Resistant – Repels dirt and absorbs spills less than some other natural fibres.

  • Eco-Friendly – Renewable, biodegradable, and sustainably sourced.

  • Temperature & Sound Regulation – Naturally insulating and reduces noise.

Ideal Uses: Bedrooms, living rooms, and formal spaces where comfort, luxury, and natural fibre benefits are priorities, loop pile wool carpet is suitable for heavy traffic spaces.

What are the benefits of wool carpet?

  • Comfort & Warmth: Naturally soft and insulating.

  • Durability: Fibres recover well from foot traffic and heavy use.

  • Stain Resistance: Naturally repels dirt and liquids better than many synthetics.

  • Eco-Friendly: Renewable, biodegradable, and sustainable.

  • Fire Resistant: Wool is naturally flame-retardant.

How does wool compare to synthetic carpets?

  • Comfort: Wool is softer and warmer underfoot.

  • Durability: Wool is long-lasting and resilient; synthetics may flatten faster.

  • Stain Resistance: Wool naturally resists stains, while synthetics vary by fibre.

  • Eco-Friendliness: Wool is sustainable; most synthetics are petroleum-based.

Is wool carpet suitable for high-traffic areas?

Yes. Wool is naturally strong and resilient. Opt for a dense pile and tighter weave to ensure long-lasting performance in living rooms, hallways, or commercial spaces.

Can wool carpet be used in homes with pets?

Yes, but regular vacuuming is essential. Wool is naturally dirt and odour resistant, but pets may cause wear or stains, so prompt cleaning is recommended.

How do I clean and maintain wool carpet?

  • Vacuum regularly to prevent dirt from embedding.

  • Spot clean spills immediately using mild detergent and water.

  • Professional cleaning every 12–18 months helps maintain fibre health.

  • Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, or excessive water, which can damage the wool.

Does wool carpet fade in sunlight?

Wool has good natural colour retention, but prolonged direct sunlight can gradually lighten colours. Using curtains, blinds, or UV-protective window film helps preserve its appearance.

Is wool carpet hypoallergenic?

Yes. Wool naturally repels dust, dirt, and allergens, making it a healthier option for homes. Regular cleaning keeps allergens at bay.

How long does wool carpet last?

With proper care, wool carpet can last 10–20 years or more, making it a long-term investment. Regular maintenance and professional cleaning will extend its lifespan.

What are the different wool carpet types?

  • Loop Pile: Durable and ideal for high-traffic areas.

  • Cut Pile: Soft and luxurious, suitable for bedrooms and living areas.

  • Cut & Loop: Adds texture and patterns, perfect for decorative finishes.

  • Hessian Backed: Common in commercial settings for extra support.

How do I choose the right wool carpet for my space?

  • Consider traffic levels: dense loops for high traffic, soft cut pile for low traffic.

  • Think about colour and style: lighter colours make spaces feel larger; darker shades hide dirt.

  • Factor in installation location: some wools are better suited for residential, others for commercial use.

Can wool carpet be installed over existing flooring?

Yes, with proper underlay. Wool carpets require a firm, clean surface, and using an appropriate underlay improves comfort, durability, and insulation.

Does wool carpet stretch or shrink?

Wool is naturally elastic and tends to recover from minor stretching, but professional installation ensures it remains stable and maintains a smooth, tight fit.

Where is wool carpet most commonly used?

Wool carpet is perfect for bedrooms, living rooms, lounges, offices, and hospitality spaces where comfort, style, and durability are priorities.

Nylon (SDN) & Polyester Carpet – Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between Solution Dyed Nylon (SDN) and Polyester carpet?

Solution Dyed Nylon (SDN) is a high-performance synthetic fibre known for strength, durability, and fade resistance. The colour is added during fibre production — not after — meaning it’s built into the fibre, not just dyed on the surface.

Polyester offers a soft, plush feel underfoot and naturally strong stain resistance, making it a popular choice for comfort and style-focused areas.

Which carpet is more durable?

SDN Nylon carpet is exceptionally durable, maintaining its shape and texture even in heavy foot traffic areas such as hallways, stairs, and living rooms.

Polyester carpet performs well in low to medium traffic spaces but may flatten sooner under constant wear.

How stain resistant are they?

Polyester is inherently hydrophobic, meaning it doesn’t absorb moisture — so spills and everyday stains clean up easily.

SDN is also highly stain resistant thanks to its colour-through fibre, which makes it resistant to bleaching, fading, and most household chemicals.

Do they fade in sunlight?

SDN carpets are extremely resistant to fading. Because the colour is part of the fibre, it won’t wash out or fade from UV exposure or cleaning.

Polyester also holds colour well, offering vibrant tones that remain consistent, though it may be slightly less UV-resistant than SDN over long periods.

Which carpet feels softer?

Polyester has a naturally plush and velvety texture — ideal for bedrooms, retreats, and comfort zones.

SDN provides a firmer, more resilient feel that still offers comfort but focuses on performance and longevity.

What about maintenance?

Both are low-maintenance carpets:

  • Vacuum regularly to prevent dirt build-up.

  • Blot spills immediately, avoiding rubbing.

  • Professional cleaning every 12–18 months keeps fibres fresh and prolongs lifespan.

Because SDN fibres resist moisture and staining, they’re also easier to clean thoroughly without colour loss.

Are they environmentally friendly?

Many Polyester carpets are made from recycled PET materials (such as plastic bottles), offering an eco-friendly synthetic option.

Some SDN carpets are recyclable and manufactured using sustainable production methods — both are great choices for environmentally conscious homes.

Where is each best suited?

  • Solution Dyed Nylon (SDN): Ideal for high-traffic areas like hallways, stairs, living rooms, and offices.

  • Polyester: Best for bedrooms, media rooms, and low-traffic spaces where comfort and softness are the main priorities.

How long will they last?

With proper care:

  • SDN carpet typically lasts 12–20 years, depending on use and quality.

  • Polyester carpet usually lasts 7–12 years, ideal for residential comfort zones.
